In short: Lightning Tracker is designed to use location only when it is useful for weather and lightning context, stores saved locations and preferences locally on your device, does not put exact coordinates into custom analytics events, and does not implement hidden tracking.
1. Information the App uses
Location information
If you grant location permission, the App can request your device location to provide local thunder risk, nearby lightning context, distance calculations, and location-based alerts. The App is designed around efficient one-shot location updates rather than continuous high-accuracy GPS tracking.
Your coordinates may be sent to a weather data provider when necessary to request location-specific weather or lightning information. Depending on the App’s production configuration, this can include MET Norway’s Locationforecast service or a server-side proxy used to access an optional licensed lightning-data provider. Exact coordinates are not intentionally included in our custom analytics events.
Saved locations, settings, and alert preferences
Saved locations, app preferences, alert settings, and related state are stored locally on your device. A small snapshot may also be stored in the App’s Apple App Group container so the Lightning Tracker widget can display current information.
Purchase and subscription information
If paid features or subscriptions are available, purchases are processed by Apple through StoreKit and the App Store. We do not receive your full payment card details. The App may use Superwall to present paywalls and RevenueCat to observe purchase events and support purchase analytics. Those services may process device, app, transaction, or pseudonymous identifiers according to their own privacy practices.
Notifications
If you enable notifications, the App can evaluate alert conditions such as nearby lightning, approaching storm activity, elevated risk, or severe activity. The current App can schedule local notifications based on refreshed observations. Notification permissions and delivery are controlled by iOS.
2. Weather and lightning data providers
The App’s default configuration uses MET Norway Locationforecast for modeled weather and thunder risk. Requests necessarily include the coordinates needed for a location-specific forecast and an identifiable application User-Agent.
If an optional observed-lightning provider is enabled, the App is designed to call a developer-controlled server proxy rather than embedding provider secrets in the iOS application. That proxy may receive the location and radius needed to retrieve lightning strikes or threat information and may apply security controls, rate limits, or caching.
Third-party providers process requests under their own terms and privacy policies. Their practices are not controlled by this Privacy Policy.
3. Analytics and tracking
Lightning Tracker does not intentionally implement hidden tracking or include exact coordinates in custom analytics events. RevenueCat is used for purchase analytics in the App’s current architecture. Superwall may process events associated with paywall presentation, placements, or subscription flows when those features are enabled.
Apple may also provide App Store, crash, diagnostic, or usage information depending on your device and App Store privacy settings. Such information is governed by Apple’s terms and privacy policies.
4. The Lightning Tracker website
This website is designed as a static site and does not intentionally set advertising cookies, run behavioral advertising trackers, or collect information through account forms. If hosting, security, or network infrastructure automatically processes standard request data such as IP address, browser type, timestamps, or security logs, that processing is generally used to deliver and protect the site.
If you contact us by email, we receive the information you choose to include in your message and use it to respond to your request.
5. How information is used
Information handled by the App may be used to provide location-specific weather and lightning context, calculate risk and proximity, maintain saved locations and preferences, operate alerts and widgets, manage purchases and subscription state, troubleshoot the service, prevent abuse, and comply with applicable law.
6. Data sharing
We do not sell your personal information. Information may be shared or processed only as reasonably necessary to provide the App, including with weather or lightning data providers, infrastructure providers, Apple, Superwall, RevenueCat, and other service providers used to operate relevant features.
We may also disclose information where required by law, legal process, or a valid governmental request, or where reasonably necessary to protect users, our rights, or the security of the service.
7. Data retention
Locally stored App data generally remains on your device until you remove it in the App, reset relevant settings, or delete the App, subject to iOS backup behavior. Third-party providers may retain request, transaction, security, or analytics data under their own retention practices.
Email correspondence may be retained as reasonably necessary to provide support, maintain business records, resolve disputes, or meet legal obligations.
8. Your choices
- You can grant, limit, or revoke location access in iOS Settings.
- You can enable or disable notifications in iOS Settings.
- You can remove saved locations and adjust alert preferences in the App.
- You can manage or cancel App Store subscriptions through your Apple account settings.
- You can delete the App to remove locally stored App data, subject to device backup behavior.
9. Children’s privacy
Lightning Tracker is not intentionally directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the App. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us so we can review the matter.
10. International processing
Third-party weather, commerce, analytics, hosting, or infrastructure providers may process information in countries other than the country where you live. Where applicable, those providers are responsible for the safeguards required for their processing.
11. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the App, providers, or legal requirements change. The “Last updated” date above will be revised when the policy changes materially.
